Singing lemurs and other curiosities

After we have spent a few days in the south, we had to move on and visit our last spot, NP Andasibe, a beautiful National park situated in the rainforest 150 km east of Tana. From Tulear to Tana is more than 1000 km,so with a car, you need more than 20 hours (and with taxi-brousse even more), so the best way is to break a trip into two parts and spend a night in Fiana.

With heavy hearts we left Tulear and took a jeep to Tana; one way to travel more comfortably and skip taxi brousse, is to look for 4 WD or other sorts of transport for tourists that are going back to Tana. How most tourists groups are doing RN 7 from Antananarivo to Tulear and then back to Tana by plane, a lot of cars are going back empty, so it is worth asking if there is a place available, it is more expensive than Taxi brousse, but believe me, it’s worth it. Our 4 WD transport also stopped in Fiana for a night.

In case you want to take a plane, it is possible, but the one-way ticket price in 2017 Tulear –Tana was 250 €! you can do so much with that amount in Madagascar, so I prefer longer and cheaper travel!

After two days trip, we were ready for a trip to Andasibe-Mantadia NP, so we took a taxi brousse in Tana direction Toamasina (before looking for transportation in Tana ask from which station is leaving TB for a particular destination); they leave you on the crossroad not far from lodges near the park, you can also take transport to Andasibe village, but in this case, you have to wait longer for that particular tb.

Andasibe NP is one of the few places where you can see Indri, the biggest lemur which is famous for its call, which sounds like a whale song ( in the video)

Also, it is a good place to see crowned sifakas, brown lemurs, boas, and many species of chameleons and interesting bugs and birds.

We stayed in Foany camp, they have different accommodations with different prices, good breakfast and in the evening and morning you can hear indris singing.

I also recommend a night tour where is possible to see a lemur mouse ( the cutest primate) and sportive lemurs.

We also took a walk to Andasibe village, where you can see the old train station and a village, there was a concert while we were there; I recommend attending at least one concert by a Malagasy star while in Madagascar, even probably you wouldn’t understand a word it’s always good fun and good opportunity to meet local people 🙂
